Very excited about tonight’s screening of Fernando Melgar’s The Fortress (2008) organized by the New Art Exchange. It’s a rare opportunity to see what looks to be a real important and unique film, and I’m participating in the panel discussion afterwards.
Here’s a trailer:
And here are details of tonight’s event:
Refugee Week Special: War on immigration
The Fortress (2008): Men, women and children from Romania, Togo, Georgia, Kosovo and Colombia arrive each week on Switzerland’s doorstep. They are running from war, dictatorship, persecution, climate change and economic problems. The Fortress puts us in the middle of this daily sorting of human beings.
The film will be followed by our seasonal VOCAL event, encouraging local conversation and debate. The VOCAL debate will explore issues around representation, cultural difference and differences in status and power.
Panel members include representatives from Beyond Borders, The Refugee Forum, Paragon Law, Roger Bromley, Alan Njanji and Matt Carr, journalist and author of Fortress Europe: Dispatches from a Gated Continent.
Age range: PG
